This chapter provides an overview of the many things that a North American psychology teacher should take into account when contemplating teaching psychology in other countries. It includes coverage of foundational competencies such as (a) maintaining awareness of being an outsider in a place where national, community, and cultural traditions and values create a social context that is different from one&s;s own, (b) being able to employ culturally sensitive communication via written, spoken, and gestural language, and (c) understanding how things are done in other countries. It also describes such psychology-specific competencies as developing a working knowledge of the department, faculty, and students where one will be teaching and includes a detailed checklist for applying the content of the book&s;s other chapters in an international teaching situation. The chapter concludes with advice about how to maximize the pleasure of teaching psychology abroad while minimizing factors that can create negative psychological consequences.
