A Picture of Perfect Mental Health: Exploring Barriers and Facilitators to First-Generation College Student Wellness Through Photovoice

Employing arts-based inquiry and drawing on photovoice, this study explores how first-generation college students manage their mental wellness at a large, public research university in the Southern United States. Compared to continuing-generation peers, these students face unique challenges, exacerbating health challenges. Findings indicated how the need for employment, college burnout, and juggling responsibilities present challenges and how connections to culture and nature helped to alleviate stress. This study is designed to inform the institution, partners, and the existing research on what presents stressors to participants and how they manage their college-going experience, so we might better serve first-generation college students.
