French pulmonologists suffered from impaired health and quality of life due to their work

Background: Several studies have investigated psychosocial (anxiety, burnout) risks among physicians. However, there are no specific data on pulmonologists. Objective: To delineate the health implications of practicing as a pulmonologist in France. Methods: Conducted as a national cross-sectional study, data collection took place anonymously online from July 12, 2023, to February 15, 2024. Participants received several reminders via email and social networks. The survey encompassed job satisfaction, factors influencing career choices and the impact of work on health. Results: Out of 2803 practicing pulmonologists, 583 (20.8%) responded to the survey, 333 (57%) being women, with a mean age of 41 (ranging from 24 to 76); 238 (41%) were hospital practitioners, 132 (23%) self-employed, 95 (16%) residents, and 60 (10%) university hospital staff. A striking 302 (52.8%) reported anxiety disorders, 129 (22.1%) experienced burn-out, 99 (17.0%) described signs of depression and 40 (6.9%) reported suicidal thoughts. Women were more affected than men. Age didn't significantly influence these findings (£ 40 years vs > 40 years). Anxiolytics were used by 111 (19.0%) and hypnotics by 60 (10.3%). Regarding sleep disorders, 376 (64.6%) pulmonologists reported sleep debt (more prevalent among the younger respondents, while 270 (46.3%) experienced a disturbed sleep. Lastly, 370 (66.4%) considered health preservation as a significant career choice factor, particularly among younger respondents. Conclusion: Our study underscores the compromised health experienced by French pulmonologists particularly among the younger ones, highlighting prevalent work-related disorders such as depression, burn-out and sleep disturbances.
