Characteristics and outcomes of RSV and Influenza hospitalized patients

We conducted a retrospective study on PCR-positive pts1 admitted to the ER2 and hospitalized pts for RSV(n=230)and Influenza(n=253)after covid-19 lockdown, aiming to investigate their characteristics and outcome. Pts with influenza received oseltamivir for 5 days. Hematologic pts were excluded. Results: Mean age of pts visiting ER were for RSV:62,67 y.o3 vs Influenza:49,61 y.o (p=0,000). Mean age of hospitalized pts were for RSV:72,9 y.o vs Influenza:67,3 y.o,(p=0,13). Hospitalization need was higher for RSV-infected individuals(53%)vs influenza(39.11%)(p=0.03).(Fig. 1 & 1a). 97,5% of RSV and 89,5% of Influenza hospitalized pts had comorbidities. More women(60,4%)than men were infected and hospitalized (63,3%)with RSV. Similar percentage of males and females (49.41%) were infected with flu. 22,4% of patients were vaccinated for flu in all ages and 57,1% in patients over 65. There was no statistically significant difference between RSV and flu pts in terms of length of hospitalization, need for oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation. Although mortality rates was 16,4% for RSV and 12,4% for Influenza, statistical difference was not established(Fig. 2). Conclusion: Pts with RSV were more likely to be hospitalized compared to influenza pts. Gender may have been a significant factor for RSV hospitalization.
