Aims & Objectives: Patients who are supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation ECMO) due to a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) have a survival of 50-60%. Quality of life outcomes have been less investigated and remain uncertain. We reviewed the short- and long-term outcomes from a small centre which offers ECMO for CDH patients. Methods: Telephone interviews with parents of patients that were treated in a tertiary paediatric intensive care unit were conducted. The Functional Status Score (FSS) and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedQL) were completed. All children that were treated with ECMO from 2010 to 2023 for a CDH were included. Results: Twenty patients were identified, with two patients having two ECMO runs. ECMO support lasted a median of 13.6 days (range 3.8 to 39). Twelve patients survived. Duration of ECMO support ranged from 3.8 to 39 days (median 13.6). The median age at the time of the phone interview was 6.3 years (range 1 to 12). The FSS showed no impairment (FSS score 6) in any domain in eight patients. Two patients had a score of 7, two patients had a score of 8 and 9, respectively. The PedQL showed a median score 84.5, with a physical health summary score of 92.5 and a psychosocial health summary score of 78.7. Conclusions: Patients with CDH who require ECMO have a significant mortality risk. Patients who survive ECMO however enjoy a quality of life that ranges between normal to slightly impaired, though no worse than that of children with biventricular, right sided, congenital heart disease.
