Economics of Arabica and Robusta coffee cultivation in Kodagu

This chapter discusses the economics of Arabica and Robusta varieties of coffee. The overall returns per rupee of investment were found to be higher in Robusta (1.28) than in Arabica (0.99). Resources such as labour use (man-days/ha), fertilizers (kg/ha) and irrigation (₹/ha) had a positive influence on the gross income (₹/ha) of the growers. The quantity of pesticides used (barrels/ha) turned out to be positive and significant only in the case of Arabica. The quantity of weedicides (litres/ha) had no influence on the gross income of the growers.
