The coffee White Stem Borer (Xylotrechus quadripes) and its impact on Arabica variety of coffee
Le résumé fourni par la source
This chapter explores factors behind a radical shift from Arabica to Robusta cultivation. The incident of White Stem Borer (WSB) was observed to be the major cause for productivity decline in Arabica, resulting in a shift from Arabica to Robusta. Looking at factors responsible for WSB attack in Arabica, it was observed that every 1 per cent increase in elevation of estates reduced the uprooting of Arabica by 8.36 per cent. Likewise, increase in the number of shade trees and expenditure on pesticides reduced the uprooting by 0.40 and 0.51 per cent, respectively. To assess the incidence of WSB on the physiological age of coffee trees, dummies were added to the age of coffee trees. It was observed that the incidence of WSB was higher in the age group between 20 and 30 years while relatively lower in the older plantations above 30 years.
