Mental health stigma has been prevalent in Indian society since the Vedic ages during which the individuals with psychiatric illness were regarded to be suffering from god's punishment for their sins, or black magic done by the enemy, or being possessed by evil spirits.The stigma still prevails and its presence is clearly evident and is even felt by individuals suffering from mental illness.The current article focuses on mental health stigma -its level and impact, as well as its presence in different countries.It particularly aims to explore the mental health stigma that is prevalent in Indian society and understand how it acts as a bane, through its cause and impact.Lastly, certain intervention techniques are discussed which may be utilized to reduce mental health stigma in Indian society.
