The medical term “immunity” is classically used to define a state in which a host organism will not develop disease after repeated encounters with a defined pathogenic agent. This acquired property is brought about by the cells of the immune system and their products. Today, all induced activities of the immune system are considered to be immune reactions, whether these reactions mediate protection or not. In fact, many immune reactions are more detrimental to the host than they are beneficial, and often protection cannot be separated from pathogenic events. Hepatitis B virus is one of those agents that is pathogenic mostly, though not exclusively, due to the immune response of the host. One of the major goals in modern vaccine development is to separate those immune reactions that are more pathogenic from those that are more protective.
