Sugarcane Management for Higher Crop and Water Productivity
Le résumé fourni par la source
The sugarcane growth period differs greatly from field crops due to its longer duration. It faces year-long exposure to weather vagaries ranging from the phases of coldest, hottest, driest, and high humidity. It becomes challenging for farmers to sense the crop’s need for water, assess water stress, and apply the right amount of water at the right time with precision. Owing to the knowledge gap in irrigation water management, over or under-irrigation is common, which results in lower yield and water productivity as well as higher costs. A huge amount of water can be saved with the application of agronomic interventions like laser land leveling, mulching, planting time, nutrition management, method of irrigation and its scheduling, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The future of irrigation for developing countries is IoT, where real-time data of physical parameters of soil and water is converted into digital form (data acquisition). It is stored in a cloud server that automatically guides the water pump and solenoid valves to initiate and stop the irrigation process. It is not beyond imagination that in the future, farmers will use this technology like the current generation is using mobile.
