Removing a pre-malignant lesion before malignant transformation and the development of invasive cancer, is a major goal of preventive surgery. This is especially pertinent if the cancer is an aggressive one like cholangiocarcinoma, which is associated with a poor overall 5-year survival rate of 5–15% ( 1 ).
