Electrostatic Charges on Microalgae Surface

Electrostatic charges on microalgae surfaces are important indicators of the viability of the algae which can be used for viability assessment. In practice, it is influenced by both the algae’s living activities and their surrounding environments. The surface charging property can be utilized for an indicative ballast water analysis. In this chapter, the mechanisms of algae surface charging including Donnan potential and surface potential, as well as its influencing factors such as pH, ionic strength, microalgae species, and growth conditions, were introduced first. The focus is then on the latest development of the applications of surface charges such as flocculation, flotation, coagulation, and electrophoretic separation.
