Use of complementary medicine methods and procedures in patients with malignant and benign breast lesions assessed by the questionnaire from the S3 guideline Complementary Medicine in Oncology

Background: The integration of complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) into breast cancer treatment is becoming increasingly important. The fact that CIM may interfere with cancer therapy leads to a great need for professional counselling of patients. It is necessary to take a comprehensive medical history. The S3 Guideline for Complementary Medicine provides a questionnaire using a "red, yellow, green" categorisation system to identify patients at risk for therapy interactions. Methods and materials: This study investigated the use of CIM in two groups of patients with malignant and benign breast lesions using the S3 guideline questionnaire. We also assessed socio-economic status, medical history, disease status and lifestyle factors. The CIM interventions used and the frequency of critical interventions were assessed. Group differences and correlations were also examined. Results: The most commonly used systemic treatments were vitamin D, green tea and chamomile. The most commonly used external treatments were classic naturopathic treatments such as heat and cold therapy, massage, sport and exercise, and relaxation techniques. There were significant differences between the groups in the use of conventional natural therapies and a vegan diet. Both groups used interventions from all three categories of the S3 guidelines questionnaire. Almost 95% of breast cancer patients used interventions in the red and/or yellow category. Conclusion: Both breast cancer and benign breast disease patients frequently use CIM methods. The procedures used differ only slightly between the two groups.
