Diversity and Phylogeography of Begomoviruses and DNA Satellites Associated with Weed Hosts

Begomoviruses are recognized as an important group of plant viruses due to the prevalence and severity of the diseases they cause worldwide. Weeds serve as reservoir hosts for begomoviruses and propagate when the primary host is not present, thanks to their high environmental tolerance. This may allow these viruses to spread to economically significant crop species, ultimately reducing output. Evaluating the genetic diversity of begomoviruses is a crucial element in developing management methods. Based on the DNA-A and DNA-B genome sequences, there are 35 bipartite and 81 monopartite begomovirus species that infect weed hosts globally. Begomoviruses are known to be associated with DNA satellites that have been detected world-wide. Breakpoint studies reveal that distinct begomoviruses that infect weed hosts exhibit both intra and interspecies recombination in their DNA-A, DNA-B genomic components, and satellite molecules.
