Today, focusing just on the productivity of existing cereal crops would not address the problem of food security because these crops are frequently selected and produced under high-intensity agriculture, making them more susceptible to future biotic and abiotic pressures. Instead, leveraging the vast pool of minor and underutilized or potential crops to diversify the agricultural system is required to preserve food and nutritional security and stability for the ever-growing population. One such group of crops is potential crops, and among these, adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), often known as red bean, red mung bean or red cowpea, is one of East Asia’s most significant potential crops. Adzuki bean belongs to the subgenus Cerototrapis of the genus Vigna and is a self-pollinating diploid legume with 22 chromosomes. The extensively cultivated Vigna angularis var. nipponensis in East Asia is considered the wild progenitor of the adzuki bean. It has a small genetic base because of its propensity for self-pollination; consequently, the available germplasm can be essential for enlarging the genetic base and developing high-yielding cultivars with desired traits. In this technological era, the adzuki bean genome sequence is a crucial resource for studying the genetic structure and functional components of the crop. While the genetic diversity of the adzuki bean germplasm has been somewhat assessed, many germplasm accessions are still poorly characterized in terms of their genetic features, agronomic performance and stress tolerance. So, characterizing available germplasm and using biotechnological approaches open new avenues for adzuki bean crop improvement programmes. This chapter provides an overview of the adzuki bean by discussing the distribution, crop gene pool, conservation and preservation of germplasm resources, and various aspects of breeding programmes.
