This paper presents a flexible back-end circuit that is designed to interrogate radio frequency (RF) wearable sensors and extract the magnitudes of their reflection and transmission coefficients. The seamless integration of this circuit with wearable sensors is due to its integration on a flexible Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) substrate. The proposed circuit operates from 500 MHz to 4 GHz, and it is composed of three different blocks: an excitation block, a harmonic suppression block, and a detection block. The first part is connected to the input of the wearable sensor and measures the magnitude of the reflection coefficient (S11), whereas the second part is connected to the output of the sensor and measures the magnitude of the transmission coefficient (S21). Finally, the back-end circuit is fabricated and tested while connected to a wearable sensor where its ability to translate the magnitudes of the reflection and transmission coefficients of the wearable sensor to dc voltages is demonstrated. The designed circuit was fabricated and tested where measurement results agree significantly with simulation data.
