Why add a global perspective to the book?For the second edition of this book, we decided to add a completely new part focused on the current situation of drug utilization research (DUR) worldwide, which looks at the strengths and limitations of DUR in different regions of the world.It is clear that medication use widely differs in different parts of the world.First, health problems are partly geographically determined, for instance, infectious diseases related to climatological circumstances (e.g., malaria) in Africa, or chronic diseases that originate from a wealthy lifestyle (e.g., type 2 diabetes) in the United States (US).Second, the demographical structure of the population highly determines the need for specific pharmaceutical treatment, for instance, treatment to avoid high infant mortality in Africa or treatment for a large segment of an older population with multimorbidity and polypharmacy in Europe.Third, the socio-economic situation of the region highly determines the organization of health care, the kind of medication that will be locally available, and how affordable medication will be for the local population.
