There are three cod stocks in Greenland, with distinct spawning sites inshore and offshore in West Greenland, and in East Greenland. The stocks grow and mature differently but are morphologically inseparable. Through passive egg/larval drift and active migration in larger fish, there is a high degree of mixing in nursery areas, and complex adult migration patterns in connection with spawning, also involve a connection to the Iceland cod stock. All this takes place near, and at, the northern distribution limit for cod, and understanding the biology and managing cod in Greenland is a complex endeavour. Cod has been fished in Greenland since the 1930’s, with catches peaking at more than 400,000 t annually in the 1960’s. A collapse in all three cod stocks ensued, and by the early 1990’s fishing was limited to a small artisanal inshore fishery. Since 2000 the fishery has increased again, but only to a fraction of the historical catches. The scientific advice on fishing is stock based, but because of stock mixing, managers are faced with the difficult task of setting quotas for a fishery that spans from small, single person, dinghies to larger, state-of-the-art trawlers.
