The Icelandic cod stock is close to the centre of its distribution range, both in relation to geographical location and temperature. The biology of the stock is influenced by the highly variable environment around Iceland, which is located at the boundary between warm Atlantic waters and waters of polar origin. This chapter explores life history of this stock and the different challenges the stock faces. The main challenges being climate change, larval drift from spawning areas towards suitable nursery grounds, negative impact of human activity and coastal habitat loss caused by various coastal development and utilization, and trophic interaction as the cod stocks depends heavily on capelin and northern shrimp, both species which have declined in the ecosystem. This chapter explores landings in relation to different gear type, spatial and temporal variation on a monthly and annual scale. Additionally, it describes assessment and management strategies. Since 1995, this stock has been assessed using a formal harvest control rule to cap the total allowable catch.
