What Cybersecurity Skills Do 2-Year (AS) Engineering Technicians Need?

Almost every list, definition, or property descriptor of "Industry 4.0" technologies expectation includes cybersecurity, which can be defined as a state of protection against unauthorized, malicious or criminal use of electronic data, as well as the measures taken to achieve this "safe" state [1].However, cybersecurity as a discipline area covers a broad range of "skills" requiring different training, experience, and expertise.Despite the many possible consequences of a cyberattack, it's important to appreciate that not all technical workers need to be cybersecurity experts.Engineering technicians, for example, typically work to keep equipment running properly to maintain operations in various facilities.These technicians may also set up and install new equipment or work in research and product development areas side-by-side with engineers or technologists.In order to keep production activities "going," what skills do operation technology (OT) technicians typically need to contribute to the cybersecurity of their workplace in their efforts to keep company operations going?This paper explores the typical hierarchy of cybersecurity in manufacturing and industrial facilities.Common hierarchical structures, to learn what skills the entry-level engineering technicians need to have, are defined.How those skills align and interact with their direct supervisors and cybersecurity business units is presented.The recommendation process for implementing cyber-related skills in Florida's AS Engineering Technology programs is also reviewed.These efforts might also help other advanced manufacturing programs nationwide determine what cybersecurity skills they should consider adding to their programs.
