Energy Characteristics for High-Sensitivity Fiber Optic Radiation Monitor

Fiber optic radiation monitors allow detection points to be located in high temperature and high dose rate environments; thus, they are particularly suitable as dosimeters for monitoring nuclear environments since the optical measurement system can be placed several hundred meters away from hazardous areas. However, a reduction in the variation of the energy characteristic is required to comply with IEC 60532. In this study, we used a numerical simulation to investigate a method that reduces variation of the energy characteristics and we evaluated a prototype fiber optic radiation monitor based on the investigation results. We found the prototype monitor can selectively detect an energy range by placing two metal housings of different densities outside the scintillators and it can reduce the variation of the energy characteristics by adding both sets of counts for the two housings. From an irradiation test done at the standard calibration site of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, we demonstrated the relative sensitivity of the high-sensitivity fiber optic radiation monitor ranged from -16% to +28% and that was within the target range of -25% to +40%.
