Le résumé fourni par la source

The EUDET-type beam telescopes are provided by several test beam facilities around the world to their users. They are required to record particle tracks mainly as reference data for beam tests of detectors for high energy physics experiments. In the approximately 15 years of their operation, the requirements for particle detectors have increased significantly. To remain able to provide adequate reference measurements, the EUDET-type beam telescopes are due for an upgrade. ALPIDE was chosen as the best available option of a pixel sensor on which to base the upgrade on. A first prototype is already in continuous user operation at the DESY II Test Beam facility. Device under test integrations with the old system can be reused with the upgraded version, requiring only minimal changes, which was an essential design specification. The 10 us readout time of ALPIDE, which is an order of magnitude smaller than that of the previously used MIMOSA26 sensor, allows for more efficient data taking. In addition, users profit from the ease of use, the very stable operation, and a high tracking efficieny. While the first prototype proves the feasibility of an upgrade of the EUDET-type beam telescopes based on ALPIDE sensors, we still aim to improve on the long-term maintainability of the new system. Thus, a second prototype is currently in production, which uses open-source components wherever possible and an architecture that is more flexible regarding specific models of central off-the-shelf components (e.g. FPGAs).
