Polymeric Nanoparticles as Nanovaccine Carriers for Eliciting Anticancer Immunity

Cancer is a concerning disease, as it causes illness at extreme levels and leads to mortality. Many approaches have already been given for cancer treatment like chemotherapy, and the usage of certain drugs. An evolving area of research is another such method, involving polymeric nano-vaccines-based cancer therapy. Cancer vaccine therapy is an immunotherapy in which the cancer is treated in a different, unique and effective manner to boost the immune system of an individual through a vaccine. Polymeric nano-vaccines are a part of nanotechnology in which biopolymers are used to develop biocompatible and biodegradable particles. This chapter discusses the general principles of drugs targeting cancer cells and the methods used to develop polymeric nano-vaccines. The polymer-based nano-vaccines in cancer vaccines can be derived from Poly-y-glutamic, Polyethylene glycol, Mannan, Poly (d, l-lactide-co-glycolide), Poly (propylacrylic) acid and polyanhydride. Further, the response mechanism of the nano-vaccines involving photo-response, and pH-response (acid-base-responsive) have been mentioned. Also, a detailed reference to TLR has been cited to understand its importance in immune system activation against cancer. Moreover, the later part of the chapter indicates novel innovations in the field of cancer nano-vaccines along with their limitations. Thus, the chapter gives a complex view of the concept and working of polymeric nano-vaccine-based cancer vaccine therapy, which can be used as a reference by medical researchers and practitioners.
