Reporting sustainable impacts for tourism events and festivals

This chapter underpins the sustainable event tourism theory by examining contemporary literature, policy and practice on reporting sustainable impacts from events and festivals, with a focus on social sustainability. The chapter shares findings from a study of events and festivals in the Western Cape region of South Africa – a leading global event destination. The study reviewed annual data captured from the Provincial Government Impact Assessment Report for events and festivals (2015–2019), followed by an online questionnaire targeting the same database (n = 15). The chapter identifies the social sustainability aims of these events as well as how they reported on social sustainability. Based on these findings, the chapter identifies future directions for research and practice of social sustainability reporting by events and festivals.
