Women in Suicide Prevention Research

Female suicide prevention researchers face barriers that their male counterparts do not; the playing field is definitely not level.As four women from different cultural backgrounds, circumstances, and career stages, we have been reflecting on this.In this editorial, we discuss the extent and nature of some of the gender disparities in suicide prevention research and how these might arise.We examine how these disparities compare with two other major fields (academic medicine, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM) and consider the importance of intersectionality.We provide some insights from our own experiences and conclude with some suggestions as to how the playing field might be levelled.
