This chapter argues that university campus design should aim to promote connectivity within the university, and that complex designs, with a human scale, which will maximise interactions, planned and unplanned, will help to achieve this. The design approach of the University of York (UK) exemplifies this, and is contrasted with that of another British “new” university of the 1960s, Sussex. Modernistic approaches to campus planning are contrasted with what is found in European towns with medieval origins, where streets and squares support human interactions.
