Space for Research and Scholarship

This chapter traces the development of the university library as a central feature in the operation of teaching and learning, and of research and scholarship. Common-pool resource (CPR) theory helps us to understand how library and other resources are used and the types of spaces needed to help with effective intellectual work - which may become, for their users, places. The idea of the “non-place” is discussed and how in the university it may appear; and how thoughtful management might change it into a place that users find welcoming.
