The University and the City

This chapter considers the role of the urban university, and how it contributes to and benefits from its urban setting. It uses Sennett’s distinction between the human interactions that create the cité and the built environment of the ville , with the two interacting purposefully to produce effective urban centres, and, as is argued here, effective universities. A case study is given of the development in recent decades of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, to show how an urban university can revitalise a downtown city area.
