Why Space? Why Connectivity?

This chapter introduces the idea of connectivity in the effective working of universities, and uses the metaphor of the couloir as a method of understanding this. The concept of social capital is introduced, in particular the idea of “generalised reciprocity” whereby individuals may benefit from the actions of others, unknown to them. The idea of “encounter management” is developed, to show how spaces in towns and buildings may be used to encourage productive human interactions. This leads on to common-pool resource theory, associated with the work of Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom, showing how social capital-rich communities can manage resources collectively for the common good. This theoretical understanding, developed originally around the use of material resources, has been applied to conceptual resources, and this chapter shows how it may help to understand how in universities social capital and connectivity resources work together.
