Boko Haram Insurgency in Northeast Nigeria

The chapter traces the background of the Boko Haram conflicts from their origins to the current state of counterinsurgency. This includes an examination of the factors behind the Boko Haram movement, what the Boko Haram insurgents are and what they are not, the manifestations of the conflicts, how the group recruits members, sources of finance, weapons and logistics and the impact of the insurgency on socio-economic and political aspects of the Nigerian state. Furthermore, the chapter postulates a framework of analysis entitled Multiple Front Reaction to present the dynamic and incisive phenomenon of Boko Haram from multiple angles. Drawing on several primary data sources obtained from interviews in the field, the chapter presents new facts and narratives about the origins and movement of Boko Haram by interviewing those who had direct access to and contact with the group’s leadership, especially in the early stages of its movement. The chapter deconstructs some distortions from previous sources about the origin and goal of Boko Haram and reconstructs new facts with resounding evidence from experts that convincingly serve as an eye-opener to the subject of the study.
