Résumé fourni par la source

This chapter looks in detail at the role of the Ulama, or religious scholars, in combating Boko Haram extremism from its inception to the present day. Some of the roles identified in the study include dialogue with the leadership of Boko Haram, debates, public lectures, engagements and intellectual discussions of the students of the Islamic University of Madina in Nigeria and in Madina with the leaders of the extremists, publications, the activities of the Da’awah Institute of Nigeria, the activities of Darul Andalus and the International Conference on Boko Haram Extremism in November 2018. The chapter draws heavily on the oral narratives of the Ulama who were interviewed. The experiences, activities and roles played by these scholars are thoroughly explored. The chapter reports that this aspect of research on Boko Haram has been greatly downplayed by investigators, leaving a large vacuum in the field of studies on Boko Haram. The chapter concludes that the insurgency could have been contained in its early stages if policy makers had listened carefully to advice and supported the activities of the Ulama.
