The photoresponse of the electrical conductivity of the silver iodide (AgI) rock-salt phase was studied under high pressure through AC impedance spectroscopy. The resistance substantially decreased by 2 orders of magnitude when the AgI sample was irradiated using visible light at 2.4 GPa. The photoinduced conductivity increased with an increase in pressure. At pressures above 2.1 GPa, the photoresponse was observed below 635 nm, which exceeds the upper wavelength limit of 450 nm under ambient pressure. Our impedance measurements show that the electronic conduction in AgI is responsible for the photoinduced resistance reduction, although AgI is a representative ionic conductor. X-ray diffraction data show that no structural changes were caused by photoirradiation, suggesting the nonoccurrence of photoinduced ionic conduction. The increase in the photoinduced electronic conductivity and the extension of the photoresponse to longer wavelengths at higher pressures are attributed to compression-induced shrinkage of the band gap.
