On the one hand, both l -cysteine ( Cys ) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide ( NADH ) are molecules of great relevance in biological systems, being involved in several metabolic pathways where electron transfer takes place. On the other hand, polyoxometalates ( POMs ) are molecular metal oxides, with a very rich and varied redox behaviour which may be modulated upon changing their structure and/or elemental composition. POMs may play the role of electron transfer mediators between electrodes and redox species, in favourable conditions behaving as electrocatalysts. This chapter deals with the use of POMs, either on their own or as constituents of hybrid materials, as electrocatalysts for the oxidation of either Cys or NADH, the purpose often being the fabrication of reliable sensors for the detection of the two analytes. Examples of both homogeneous and heterogeneous electrocatalysis are given, in the latter case resorting to modified electrodes on the surface of which a POM-based composite has previously been immobilized. Electrochemical methods are necessarily at the heart of the works described, which yielded very promising results and paved the way for future improvements regarding the development of analytical devices.
