Confronting the Realities of Climate Change

This chapter shares well-established scientific evidence to explain that: climate change is real, it is happening, and it will continue to impact environmental health and justice. Importantly, it highlights the unequal distribution of climate impacts, including impacts on specific populations, such as children and pregnant people, as well many marginalized populations. Many pathways between climate-related events and physical and mental health are introduced. Case studies of extractive practices associated with climate change, the 1995 Chicago Heat Wave as an example of an extreme weather event, and a closer look at global displacement are examined. As discussed, effective climate communication is needed to support individual and systemic change as society works to mitigate and adapt to climate change. This chapter provides many climate justice solutions that are necessary to address what is perhaps the greatest global health challenge of this century.
