Contingently assembling resources afforded by interactional infrastructure

In addition to modifying interactional practices as a result of handling troubles in talk ( Chapter 3 ) or appropriating co-participants’ turns ( Chapter 4 ), the two guest-relations officers in our data also appeared to fine-tune their interactional conduct in ways that were afforded by local interactional mechanisms. While repair mechanisms and co-participants’ turns are part of the interactional affordances in conversations, this chapter traces changes that seem to be brought about particularly by the sequential organization of interaction itself. Specifically, we focus on such affordances made available in informing sequences. The analysis will show that competence development afforded by interactional mechanisms may be incremental, and changes may appear first in specific contexts before they become integrated into routine procedures.
