Role of Mitochondria in Ischemic-Reperfusion Injury

Ischemia/reperfusion (IRI) injury occurs when cellular injury which is initiated by hypoxia or anoxia in an organ is aggravated when tissue pH and oxygen supply are restored. Initially, it starts as a process that is confined to a region that results in the death of parenchymal cells and then escalates to a severe inflammatory response involving both Cytotoxic processes, both direct and indirect. Ischemia-reperfusion injury in organ transplantation is a complex process that results in damage to organs and primary graft failure. The injury to the organ is caused by a complex series of events, involves the energy substrate depletion, as well as the modification of the two kinds of cell death, are apoptosis and necrosis., as well as ionic balance and there is the development of reactive oxygen species. A rising body of data suggests mitochondria are involved in disease. This procedure is required due to the significant changes that occur during ischemia and reperfusion. Understanding the pathways that cause mitochondrial damage could be useful in creating measures to prevent it.
