Neurotransmission Imbalance: A Major Factor in the Worsening of Ischemic Injury

Ischemic Injury is characterized by diminished/absent blood flow in the brain. There are numerous factors and molecular cascades that are linked with pathological hallmarks of Ischemic Injury. There is a neurotransmission imbalance after the injury. Numerous neurotransmissions regulate the essential signaling for normal physiology and the working of the brain. After the injury, there is impairment in the balance of major neurotransmitters, i.e., Glu, which shows expression which leads to neuronal excitotoxicity compromising the normal physiology. GABA is reversely related to Glu, post-injury the reduced level of GABA contributes to neuronal excitability and neuronal death. Monoamines are responsible for the happiness, mood swings and the movement of the individual, post-injury creates a deficit in the level of the monoamine which could generate the state of altered mood, movement impairment, mood swings, etc. The cognitive impairment is observed after the brain insult which could be correlated with the level of Ach. AChE activity is increased in the ischemic patients which decreases the ACh level which could be correlated with the memory impairment. These neurotransmission imbalances could be beneficial to target pathological alterations and may give new insight to find novel treatments to manage associated complications.
