A Study on Energy Diagnosis and Efficiency Improvement for Public Sewage Treatment Facilities

The purpose of this study is to contribute to achieving energy independence of public sewage treatment facilities by deriving energy saving measures from energy diagnosis and evaluation. The Tool-kit program of the Korea Environment Corporation is applied to the A sewage treatment facility in B city to diagnose energy consumption patterns and draw up an energy flow diagram for each process. As a result of the energy diagnostic evaluation of the A sewage treatment facility, the power load rate is the highest in the biological treatment process, and the main equipment of the energy consuming process is identified as a blower, pump and agitator. As an energy saving measure, the efficiency of the pump could be increased by designating a constant speed pump and controlling the number of revolutions through the installation of an inverter when operating the pump. Additionally, blowers and agitators can save energy by improving motor drive equipment and replacing high-efficiency electric motors. In fact, the greenhouse gas reduction due to replacement of the denitrification tank agitator in A sewage treatment facility was found to be 214 tCO2 per year. Therefore, it is believed that the greenhouse gas reduction can be further increased by the methodology for energy efficiency improvement proposed in this study, thereby increasing the contribution to energy independence.
