The Electrochemical Theory of Berzelius

There is little doubt that the electrochemical theory of Berzelius has had a lasting influence in chemistry, and that considerable traces of this are still discernable. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the origins of the theory, using this phrase in two senses. First, an attempt will be made to analyse the influences operating upon Berzelius in the early years of the last century and supplying him with concepts that he was to embody in his own scheme; then the external events that drew forth his main expositions of it will be briefly outlined. Later papers will describe details of the theory and offer an assessment of its significance for chemistry as a whole.
