Abstract Introduction The development of aerobiology in the last years represents an additional support to study the effects of climate change (CC) on human health. It is well known that higher temperatures increase the likelihood of extreme meteorological events, entail prolonged pollen seasons, and promote the interaction between pollen and chemical pollutants. Workplaces are suitable to plan more targeted studies on CC, aeroallergens and allergic diseases. Methods Since 2014, occupational allergies and CC were included in INAIL research activities with a multidisciplinary approach. Focus on occupational allergies based on literature analysis, Hirst and real-time aerobiological methods as well as serum multiplex methodologies is provided. Results Taking into account the seasonality, aerobiological outdoor samples were analyzed and pollen species characterized. The indoor aerobiological monitoring highlighted the association between occupants and pollen levels. Sensitisation to plant allergens was more frequent than that to other allergens. Discussion Guidelines published by WHO in September 2021 included among research priorities multiple exposures to air pollutants (including pollen and other aeroallergens), interaction with other environmental and climatic factors, improvement of methodological aspects. Our results on aerobiology and CC stress the value of these issues and the role of occupational exposure. Aerobiological monitoring, proper health surveillance and allergen testing should be combined for a better management of occupational health concerns. Conclusion A multidisciplinary approach applied in different working settings is needed to address the role of environmental, occupational and individual variables. The results confirm the importance of CC as a modulator of allergic responses and related diseases.
