O70 Impact of a train the endoscopy nurse trainer course- time to invest in our endoscopy nurse educators

Introduction Joint Advisory Group Endoscopy (JAG) values the importance of skilled endoscopy trainers in ensuring everyday training standards are high.1 Significant gains in endoscopy key performance indicators have resulted since implementing training standards2 with endoscopist specific train the trainer (TTT) courses improving patient outcomes.3 JAG thus mandates endoscopist TTT courses; however, the endoscopy nurse workforce aren’t supported with similarly trained educators or courses. We therefore developed a bespoke train the endoscopy nurse trainer (TENT) course. Methods A working group with expertise in nurse, adult and endoscopy training from 2 NHS England Endoscopy Training Academies developed a face to face one day course complimenting JETS online modules. A multi-pronged approach targeted nurse educators in endoscopy units in two regions and 4 TENT courses delivered (Midlands=3, South West=1). Delegate evaluation was via pre- and post-course electronic surveys. Statistical analysis was with Wilcoxon matched pairs test. Results 37 educators attended TENT with most having regular trainees on lists [92% (34/37)] and being in formal trainer roles [57% (21/37)]. Yet only 8% (3/37) had attended prior face-to-face TTT training. Table 1 demonstrates significant improvement in confidence in endoscopy nurse trainers in core endoscopy nurse training skills. Additionally after the course the majority of delegates expressed moderate or high confidence in their ability to teach practical skills in the endoscopy room (80%), ability to deliver practical teaching sessions outside the endoscopy room (84%) and ability to deliver lecture based teaching (74%). Conclusions Supporting the development of the workforce educators and establishing resources that recognise the unique challenges in professions are key objectives set out by the NHS4. Our novel TENT course enhances endoscopy nurse educators in their roles by demonstrating improvement in the confidence and ability of endoscopy nurse trainers to teach and train effectively in their specific environment.
