Transforming mental health for all: Launch of the 2022 World Mental Health Report

On 17 June 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) published the World Mental Health Report, an extensive document that addresses the topic of mental health across the globe by highlighting why change is needed and how it can best be achieved. To celebrate the publication of this monumental research, the first of its kind in 20 years, the WHO hosted a launch event, where speakers from different constituencies commented on the report and issues and experiences about mental health. Presenters included the United Nations Secretary-General; the Director-General of the WHO; the Director of the WHO Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse; representatives from national governments of Argentina, Botswana, New Zealand and Norway; and persons with “lived experience” of mental health issues, as well as a performer whose student died tragically from a mental health condition. Three key paths to transforming mental health presented were to deepen commitment, reshape environments, and strengthen community mental health care, supplemented with country examples from India and Peru. A web page was also launched providing supplementary material including a Report summary, resources and successful government efforts in countries like Brazil, Singapore, and Türkiye.
