Moving Forward
Le résumé fourni par la source
The COVID-19 pandemic has further marginalized vulnerable populations in our society. In this chapter we will explore some of the ways certain groups such as front-line workers, non-binary/transgender populations, older adults, ethnic minority groups, people with disability, incarcerated individuals and substance abusers have been further disadvantaged by the pandemic and proactive steps that can be taken to empower these groups with improved access to facilities to support their unique healthcare needs. In the case of older adults, the chapter investigates if older adults can comprehend important COVID-19 messages in video/online formats for effective information processing of health-related information and how altered styles of communication due to social measures restricting face-to-face interaction have impacted the mental health of older adults. This is followed by a discussion of more inclusive steps that can be taken in disability research. The chapter concludes with suggestions on how communication principles can be applied to public health messages about the pandemic that will more effectively reach these vulnerable groups.
