The Dangers of the Infodemic

During the early stages of a pandemic, it is critical that authentic fact-based information about preventative measures is disseminated as quickly and efficiently as possible. While there is a plethora of credible information about vaccination and other life-saving measures for disease prevention, there is also a lot of untruthful, or misinformation. The danger of widespread misinformation during a public health crisis is that it may undermine the ability to reach a collective understanding of the situation as well as take collection action. Given that misinformation has reached crisis proportions, in this chapter we will investigate how we can effectively locate the sources of misinformation and slow or stop its spread. We will investigate who are more susceptible to believing misinformation and the role social media has had in spreading misinformation. We will also explore how we can make the public more aware of this misinformation and encourage information seeking behaviors that lead to more credible information dissemination.
