Trust in the Government During the Covid-19 Pandemic and How To Be a Good Leader

It is imperative that health information is trusted to promote disease prevention. In the case of a public health crisis, vaccination information may come from a variety of sources including government agencies who communicate important health advice to the public and mandate procedures to help contain the spread of the virus, as well as through social media and members of the public. In this chapter, we explore the unique role and nature of trust during the COVID-19 pandemic. This chapter will review existing studies to examine if available information regarding preventative measures is trusted, and the potential role of trust in facilitating information to taking action to protect oneself during a crisis event. We will also explore cognitive and affective bases of trust in theories of information processing.
