Toward a Better Understanding of Communication Breakdowns During the Covid-19 Pandemic

In order to effectively improve containment strategies in future pandemics, we need to better understand the communication gaps that took place during the COVID-19 pandemic. This chapter explores how we seek information, process it, and equip ourselves for good decision-making during a public health crisis. Given the ever-changing nature of a pandemic, we examine the role of situational awareness in making sense of the information we are given. We also look at the role of mental models in understanding how communication gaps occur during disaster management. Given the many changes in how communication takes place in our post-pandemic world, we investigate the virtual workplace and ask how does communication take place with the changing role of the leader when communication takes place remotely?
