Mechanisms for Induction of Bio-effects of Focused Ultrasound in Tissue

When an ultrasound beam travels through tissue, it undergoes a number of interactions including reflection, refraction, scatter and absorption. The scatter by structures within the tissue enables images to be formed using the echo amplitude of the scattered energy received by the transducer and its time of arrival. The proportion of energy lost to the surroundings depends on the properties of the medium. For example, an ultrasound beam is attenuated more in bone than in soft tissues. Absorption is the main factor that determines tissue heating. The processes by which ultrasound energy is converted to heat in the body are described in this chapter, as is the effect that this heat may have on tissues. This is followed by a description of the mechanical effects caused by forces and pressures exerted on tissues.
