Disney’s 1943 wartime propaganda film Education for Death follows a young German boy named Hans who is successfully indoctrinated with Nazi ideology. Even in adulthood, Hans is denied all self-agency as the state maintains him in an arrested state of childness that ultimately leads to his death. Education for Death contains imagery recycled from Disney’s 1940 film Pinocchio . Staged in Bavaria, Pinocchio invites speculation as to an underlying message about the fate of Germany’s children under Nazism. Applying Achille Mbembe’s theory of necropolitics, the chapter explores how both Pinocchio and Education for Death create “death-worlds” for their characters, reducing them to a state of undeadness.
