The global trends of urbanization and infrastructure construction bury a large portion of the earth’s surface in concrete, which has a profound impact on soil biodiversity and ecosystem services. The same is true for mining and garbage disposal sites. Indirectly related to human activities, climate change and invasive species have grown more serious during the last two decades. The majority of hazards to soil biodiversity, soil health, quality, and functioning are connected with human activities and land use cover, management, and transformation amongst which urbanization stands for a major share. Importantly, factors of climate change and intensification of land use are not entirely independent of one another and, hence, co-occur not only leading to the destruction of fertile soil cover but also having harmful impacts on the environment. Therefore, the management of soils of urban areas is extremely important for improving the productivity of these soils. Through resource-efficient agriculture and possible eco-friendly future possibilities, good soil management serves as the basis for increasing livelihoods. In densely populated areas, such as metropolitan cores and urban fringes, the soil’s utility is improved. Identifying the soil resource’s abiotic and biotic properties, as well as its important role in supplying valued ecosystem services to society, is necessary to recognize its use value. Ecosystem-based management is required for soil governance when using an asset-based strategy. Soil’s role in ecosystem services must be taken into account in policymaking if we are to maximize our use of limited resources. Therefore, the resource efficiency domain must extend beyond a concentration on the circular economy in order to coincide with a green economy viewpoint in connection to soil governance.
