Through proactive engagement with industry, government and communities, universities can and do positively impact society. With the remainder of this book offering important insights into strengthening institutional and individual level mechanisms, activities and opportunities to advance engagement for impact, this chapter seeks to act as a conversation starter of what comes next. Based on the premise that we need to go beyond partnerships to achieve the transformative impact society needs, we introduce contemporary thinking on market shaping and collective engagement to the discussion on university–industry engagement. We hope that this stimulates a discussion on how we should jointly design the system in which impact can thrive. Universities need to be deeply embedded in collective groups which seek to mobilise key stakeholders, develop a clear vision and purpose, and foster collective or shared engagement towards that purpose. This will enable the impact and transformation needed to address opportunities and challenges of modern society, in turn leading to tangible actions and developments in the future.
